Padmarajan's very first film as a director,adopted his own novel 'peruvazhiyambalam'.The movie set in a rustic background had Ashoakn as the central character.Gopi plays the role of a tea shop owner in a far flung place,where Ashokn flees to after murdering a rapist local Goonda,Prabhakaran Pillai. Gopi consumed by his hatred towards the dead Goonda,offers Ashokan a safe hideout in the place of his mistress,played by KPAC Lalitha.His concern for the under aged criminal,anguish about his family life destroyed by Bhargavan Pliiali, along with a soft corner for the mistress whom he shares with another person, all conveyed through the unrefined style of a villager remains etched in the viewers mind.The movie won the National award for the best Malayalam film of the year. Peruvazhiyambalam was also selected as one The 100 greatest Indian films of all times by IBN Live.
