Gopi till then a relatively unknown actor,except for a brief appearance in Adoor's first movie,Swayamvaram,with Kodiyettam he was catapulted to fame.He won so much popularity that he was referred to fondly as 'Kodiyettan Gopi'. He won the national award and state awards for the best actor (Bharath award then) for his performance in Kodiyettam.Thus he graduated from Kodiyettam Gopi to Bharath Gopi.He even legally adopted this name.
