Mohammed Sabeer Baburaj a.k.a MS Baburaj was an extraordinary genius, who imparted the flavor of Ghazals and Hindustani music to the Malayali.

MS Baburaj was born to Jan Mohammed Sahib, a Bengali Hindustani singer and a Malayali mother on March 29, 1921. Baburaj had a childhood racked by poverty. He sang in streets and trains in return for a square meal. A kind-hearted policeman who recognized the immense talent in this street singer adopted him and this proved to be the turning point in Baburaj’s life. Soon he filled wedding halls in Kozhikkode with his music.

Baburaj who entered the Malayalam theatre scene with his music composition for ‘Inquilabinte Makkal’ (1951), went on to compose music and sing for several dramas. T Mohammed Yusuf’s ‘Kandam Becha Coat’ and Kerala Kalavedi’s ‘Nammalonnu’ were a couple of his popular numbers.

He became a solo music composer for films with ‘Minnaminungu’. P Bhaskaran wrote most of the songs for which he composed music. He has also given unforgettable melodies to songs written by Vayalar, ONV, Sreekumaran Thampi and Yusufali Kecheri.

MS Baburaj who breathed his last on October 7, 1978 left behind a priceless repertoire of soulful melodies, which have earned him an eternal place in the hearts of those who love music.
