Padmakumar started his career as an art director. He was the associate director of late G Aravindan. He was associated with Aravindan in all in his films, except Pokkuveyil. He directed his first film Aparana in 1981. His second venture, Sammohanam received the Best of the Fest Award at the Edinborough International Film Festival in 1995.
He has acted in few films including, Paadam Onnu our Vilaapam, Kanchana Sita and Pakalnakshathrangal. Padmakumar was also associated with films like Thampu, Sooryante Maranam, Esthapan, Naseema (thamburu), Oridath, Vaasthuhaara and Swam as their art director.
He was unmarried.
