G Sankara Kurup

Jnanpeet winner and Pride of Malayalam, G Sankara Kurup (born 1901) has penned lyrics for film songs too. His work first appeared in Nirmala, which also happens to be the first movie in Malayalam to feature playback singing. Many of his poems too were later used in films.

G Sankara Kurup’s impressive legacy includes priceless poetic works such as Odakkuzhal, Sooryakanthi, Jeevanasangeetham etc.

Sankara Kurup received the Jnanpeet, India’s highest honour for literary achievement in 1965. He passed away in 1978.
