Kambisseri Karunakaran was born to Kambisseri Kochikko Channar, in Vallikunnam on March 31 , 1922. He was a social activist, a member of the legislative assembly, a journalist , an actor and an accomplished writer.
Karunakaran joined Trivandrum Sanskrit college after his matriculation and became active in the freedom struggle, for which he was jailed for some time. Famous dramatist Thoppil Bhasi and Kambisseri were once staunch supporters of the Indian National Congress but distanced themselves from it after independence. Both the friends became associated with the communist movement and soon became the leading figures of it in kerala during the 1940s and 50s. Kambisseri held the post of the editor of Janayugam Weekily owned by the Communist Party of India.
Abhinayachinthakal, Anthya Darshanam, Koonanthara Paramuvum Poona Kesavanum, Kure Sambhavangal are some of his famous works.
Kambisseri associated himself with KPAC which his soulmate Thoppil Bhasi had founded. He acted in many dramas and at least seven movies that include Ashwamedham, Adyakiranangal, Nithyakanyaka, Ninamaninja Kalppadukal etc.
He passed away on 27th July 1977.
Kambisseri Karunakaran Memorial, a cultural centre in Kambisseri's memory is functioning in Charummodu near Vallikunnam
