Born to Mavelikkara Payikkad Veettil Raghavan Panikkar and actress Mavelikkara Ponnamma, Maya completed her schooling from Mavelikkara High School and B.Sc. Physics from Thiruvananthapuram Women's College. Maya, who accompanied her mother for shooting of the movie "Kadalamma", was incidentally casted as Sathyan's heroine in the movie. Later, she acted as the heroine of Prem Nazir in the movie Devatha, using her real name, Sushama.
She married Padmanabhan Iyengar on 1968 February 3. Children - Dr. Sreekumar and Dr. Lakshmibhai - both working in Qatar.
